I think the dangers of conventional deodorants and antiperspirants are the most widely known of hygiene products. It seems that most people are trying to find a nontoxic deodorant alternative due to the direct application near lymph tissue and the link between breast cancer and chemicals such as parabens in deodorants. That means that most of these same people have also lived through the very real struggle of finding a natural alternative that doesn’t leave you stinky. Never mind that if you do find a natural deodorant that actually works, most contain high doses of baking soda that can be super irritating leaving you with a rash. I dont want exposure to toxic chemicals, but I also dont want rashy armpits that smell. And so begins the battle between carcinogenic products that actually work, and natural ones that have a bad rep. I am at a place where I have tried what feels like every natural deodorant on the market, but today I am sharing some of my favourites that actually get the job done, and well.
1) Routine. I love that Routine is a Canadian company, and they include a lot of less common deodorant ingredients such as magnesium. Magnesium deficiency can actually cause body odour. They have a ton of different formulas and scents, some including charcoal or baking soda free versions. I get no skin reaction from this one, and it truly keeps you smelling fresh. My only downfall to this one is the price (about $30 CAD) and the fact that you have to use your fingers to apply. I find that a little less than convenient, but how well it works really does make up for it. I find it even works well through a workout.
2) Schmidt’s. This is a pretty common option. I have used a few versions of their deodorant, and the only one that works for me is the Bergamot Lime. Their formula does include baking soda, but the amount is small enough that it doesnt give me a reaction. It smells great and comes in stick form. It lasts well through a summer day. The only downfall I have for this is that it is a softer formula so it makes a bit of a mess on the container… but that is just being nitpicky. The price is right at about $7.
3) Every Man Jack. I think its really cool that this is a nontoxic product company targeted directly towards men. I havent seen much in the way of nontoxic mens products. Their entire line is great. I forgot my deodorant on a trip and ended up just using my fiance’s… and then bought my own. This goes on just like conventional deodorants, isnt messy and works well. It just smells a little more manly, which doesnt bother me. I am really excited about this brand!
All that being said, there are ways to reduce stink. One is to increase your magnesium intake. This will help prevent stink but also a multitude of other things such as improving sleep, reducing muscle cramping, as well as keeping you regular 😊 Another option is to apply a clay mask to your pits. I dont think this is something many people consider, but just as you would apply a clay mask to your face to help detoxify, you can apply one to your pits as well!
It can be a journey to finding a decent natural deo. Hopefully these suggestions help you choose one that will work for you & lessen the struggle of finding one which took me years. Let me know if you try any of these suggestions or have any others you have had luck with.
